FAHM Film Series: Delano Manongs: Forgotten Heroes of the United Farmworkers Movement In-Person
The Filipino American History Month (FAHM) Planning Committee invites all members of the Sacramento State University community to a screening of 3 films during the month of October 2025. Following the 2025 theme, Faith, Labor, and Care: Sacrifices and Solidarity among Filipino Americans on Screen, the films chosen illustrate enduring features of Filipino cultural heritage and history.
Delano Manongs: Forgotten Heroes of the United Farmworkers Movement (2014, runtime: 28 minutes) tells the story of farm labor organizer Larry Itliong and a group of Filipino farm workers who instigated one of the American farm labor movement's finest hours -- The Delano Grape Strike of 1965 that brough about the creation of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW).
While the movement is known for Cesar Chavez's leadership and is considered a Chicano movement, Filipinos played a pivotal role. Filipino labor organizer, Larry Itliong, a cigar-chomping union veteran, organized a group of 1500 Filipinos to strike against the grape growers of Delano, California, beginning a collaboration between Filipinos, Chicanos and other ethnic workers that would go on for years.
A panel discussion of the themes will be held after the screening.
A Salo-Salo sa Esak'tima reception will follow the film screening and panel discussion. Registration is required.
